University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown

Work Programs

Federal Work-Study Program

  • Students must demonstrate financial need to qualify for the program. Financial need is determined by completing the FAFSA.
  • Students are paid $10 an hour and work 10 hours a week during the fall and spring terms. Schedules are flexible, allowing students to work around their classes.
  • Students may apply for Federal Work-Study by completing the FAFSA and indicating on the FAFSA that they would be interested in student employment.
  • Beginning July 15, students may find a job by checking the positions posted on Pitt-Johnstown's internal website. Students interview with the supervisor listed, and if hired, are placed on the University’s payroll and receive a paycheck bi-weekly.
  • Students are not guaranteed a position, and all jobs are filled on a first-come, first-served basis.
  • Full-time and part-time positions are available during the summer for continuing students.

To participate in the Federal Work-Study program, students need to:
    • Accept your Federal Work-Study award on My Pitt
    • Search and apply for available Federal Work-Study positions at join.pitt.edu.
    • Once hired, complete all necessary onboarding paperwork.
    • Each week, you and your supervisor are responsible for accurately recording and submitting hours worked in Pitt Worx.
    • Keep track of your earnings to make sure you do not exceed your Federal Work-Study award.

Campus Employment

  • Students do not need to complete a FAFSA in order to be considered for campus employment.
  • Individual departments pay wages out of their operating budget; therefore, the number of hours and the wage rate is determined by each department.
  • Most campus employment positions are posted by individual departments. Campus employment positions are posted on the internal website.

PA State Work-Study Program

  • PHEAA conducts an off-campus State Work-Study Program which can be arranged for any term. The positions provide Real World work experience that complements the student's major.
  • To be eligible for the program, students must be a Pennsylvania resident, enrolled at least half-time (six or more credits), and eligible for a PA state grant.
  • Students can arrange to work under this program during the fall, spring, or summer terms. Students may work for an eligible employer in their hometown or in any other county. Employers benefit under this program because they are reimbursed for a portion of the wages.
  • Students may create jobs by asking potential employers to consider participating in the State Work-Study Program.
  • Students can obtain a PA State Work-Study Program application and additional information on PHEAA's website.
