Degree Programs

Pitt-Johnstown's Natural Sciences Division offers degrees in several fields. Students benefit from excellent instruction in small classes combined with hands-on opportunities that prepare them for employment opportunities and graduate study.  Students in fields such as Psychology, Energy and Earth Resources, and Mathematics are well prepared for employment as well as graduate study and eventual licensure in their fields. Students who wish to go on to pre-health professions programs (Pre-Medical, Pre-Dental, Pre-Optometry, Pre-Veterinary, Pre-Podiatry, Pre-PT, Pre-OT and others) are well prepared by faculty who are dedicated to advancing students in these professions. Our BiochemistryBiology, and Chemistry graduates have found success in a large variety of positions and programs.

Hands-on, real world experience is available to students in all of our science programs. Students work with faculty on research projects and in internships in the community. The annual Symposium for the Promotion of Academic and Creative Enquiry (SPACE), provides students with an opportunity to showcase their research findings.

Our students also benefit from partnerships with professionals and organizations from throughout the region. A highly successful collaboration with the Chan Soon-Shiong Institute of Molecular Medicine at Windber connects Pitt-Johnstown faculty and students with career scientists. Examples of this collaboration include:

  • A team-taught course in genetics;
  • Research into prostate cancer in African-American men;
  • Ongoing exchange of research interests and student internships;
  • Real-world opportunities to work in the Chan Soon-Shiong Institute’s world-class facilities.

Pitt-Johnstown offers a joint medical technology program with Conemaugh Health System in which students earn either a biology or chemistry degree from Pitt-Johnstown and a Certificate in Medical Technology from the hospital.

Students in most pre-health professions programs (Pre-Medical, Pre-Dental, Pre-Optometry, Pre-Veterinary, Pre-Podiatry, and others) will complete a bachelor’s degree at Pitt-Johnstown before proceeding to the doctoral program at the school of their choice. For some programs, such as Pre-Nutrition and Dietetics and Pre-Athletic Training, students will take course work (usually 60 credits over 2 years) at Pitt-Johnstown. During their second year, students apply for admission to the specific department at the Pittsburgh-Oakland campus to complete their degree requirements.
