Pennsylvania Department of Education Secretary Noe Ortega and Deputy Secretary Tanya Garcia visited campus on August 24 to praise President Jem Spectar on the campus response to the pandemic. Ortega shared in an interview with the Tribune-Democrat that the Deputy Secretary visited Pitt-Johnstown to "celebrate and really thank" the school's leadership for COVID-19 mitigation efforts."For us, the takeaway is that the personnel, faculty and staff responded in commendable ways," Secretary Ortega said.
Speaking to faculty, Secretary Ortega said, “Three years ago, I had my orientation right here at the University of Pittsburgh in Johnstown when Pitt hosted a Board retreat here. I got to be a part of it. When I served as Deputy Secretary, the role Dr. Garcia now holds, I never could imagine I would come into this role as Secretary to support you and your work.” President Spectar gave a campus tour for the Secretaries who spoke with faculty and students. They visited the nursing simulation labs and visited the Nursing and Engineering buildings.
