Pitt-Johnstown Honors Achievements at 2019 Academic Convocation Event

 

Pitt-Johnstown’s annual Academic Honors Convocation ceremony was Friday, April 5, 2019, at Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center on the Pitt-Johnstown campus.

Academic Honors Convocation recognizes the exemplary academic achievement of our students, and provides an opportunity for the students' families, donors, and members of the campus community to celebrate their success.

Nancy Coleman Mickle and President Jem Spectar A luncheon was held prior to the event at the Living Learning Center. 

More than 50 students were acknowledged at the luncheon, which included only donor-funded awards.

Guest speaker was Nancy Coleman Mickle, the widow of Marlin Mickle, PhD, a professor emeritus of electrical and computer engineering.

The Honors Convocation Ceremony followed at the Pasquerilla Performing Arts Center.

Business & Enterprise Division 

College Scholar in Accounting
1st Summit Bank Accounting Award

This award is presented for academic excellence and high promise of professional success in accounting and auditing.

Sarah Conte
Ms. Conte is the daughter of Pat and Mary Jean Conte of Pittsburgh and a graduate of Pittsburgh Creative and Performing Arts School. She is an accounting major.

College Scholar in Finance

Adam Kiess
Mr. Kiess is the son of Ernest and Laura Kiess of Jersey Shore and a graduate of Jersey Shore High School. He is a finance graduate

Mr. Diao is the son of Zhanyuan Diao and Lan Ding of Dongying and a graduate of St Mary’s Ryken High School. He is a marketing, accounting, information systems and finance major.

Ms. Mattivi is the daughter of Cynthia Mattivi of State College  and a graduate of State College Area High School. She is a management major.

CTC Award in Honor of Congressman John P. Murtha
This award is given annually to the graduating senior student in management who exhibits outstanding leadership qualities in civic responsibilities and great potential for professional success in the public or private sectors.

Kia Clayton
Ms. Clayton is the daughter of Curtis Clayton and Delana Dospoy of Blairsville and a graduate of Blairsville High School. She is a marketing major.

G. Fesler Edwards Award
This award is presented to students who have completed their junior year in the business program with excellent records and high potential for success in the business field

Megan Law
Ms. Law is the daughter of Stacey Law of Somerset and a graduate of Somerset Area High School. She is an information systems and financial accounting major.

Phoenix Stratemeier
Mr. Stratemeier is the son of Robert Grandizio of McKeesport and Darla Stratemeier of Addison and a graduate of Turkeyfoot Valley High School. He is an information systems and management major.

This award is presented for academic excellence and high promise of professional success in managerial accounting.

This award is presented by the Pitt-Johnstown Accounting Alumni Advisory Board and recognizes achievement in accounting service to the Pitt- Johnstown community and leadership within the accounting community.

Virginia Koumoungis Golubic Poetry Award
This award is presented to an outstanding poet for a selection of poems. In honor of her inspirational mother, this award was established by professor Helen Golubic who taught in the Public Relations and Journalism Department for more than 30 years.
Louise Letizia Miele Award
This award is presented to a female student whose poetry and creative prose demonstrate an outstanding ability and the probability of success in the field of writing

Samantha Yamrose
Ms. Yamrose is the daughter of Douglas and Kimberly Yamrose of South Fork and a graduate of Forest Hills High School. She is a creative writing and French major.

Carroll Grimes Award for Writing in Humanities
This award is presented to the undergraduate writer of the best scholarly or critical essay written for a Humanities class. The award is named for Dr. Carroll Grimes, Humanities Division Chair from 1971-2002, whose love of teaching and love of learning are contagious and legendary.

Brianna Facciani
Ms. Facciani is the daughter of Greg and Donna Facciani of Summerhill and a graduate of Forest Hills High School. She is an English literature major.

Humanities Creative Prose Award
This award is presented for excellence in the genres of short story, personal essay, or memoir for full-time students.
Kamal Verma Scholarship
This award recognizes excellence by the student who produces the best essay on any aspect of South Asia (to include its various languages, literatures, histories, and cultures) in a UPJ class this academic year. 

Breanna Berkebile
Ms. Berkebile is the daughter of Gene and Bonnie Berkebile of St. Michael and a graduate of the Cambria County Christian School. She is a creative writing, English literature and journalism major.

Journalism Award
This award is presented for having achieved the highest standards of talent and performance in collegiate journalism and having demonstrated the promise of developing skills necessary for a successful career in professional journalism.

Ms. Burgan is the daughter Mark and Kellie Burgan and the late Cary Burgan of Johnstown and a graduate of Bishop McCort Catholic High School. She is a journalism and business management major.

This award is presented for excellence in the areas of reportage; feature magazine, or editorial writing; and literary journalism.

The Thomas H. Russell Memorial Award in Journalism
This award is presented to a student who has displayed consistently, both in the classroom and in the practical application of the craft, the highest potential for a successful career in professional journalism and who demonstrates civility and a sense of humor in their work and interaction with others (traits for which Mr. Russell was known and respected).

Dr. Jem Spectar Award
This award has been established by the Pitt-Johnstown Advisory Boardin recognition of Dr. Jem Spectar being named the fifth president of the University of Pittsburgh Johnstown and is presented to a top student in his/her junior year.

Jaidyn Fronzaglio
Ms. Fronzaglio is the daughter of Frank Fronzaglio Jr. of Donora and Beth Fronzaglio of Charleroi and a graduate of Charleroi High School.  She is a nursing major.

Faculty Senate Scholar Athlete Award
This award is presented to a graduating senior who participates in the college’s Intercollegiate athletics program, is involved in extracurricular activities, and demonstrates academic achievement.

Leigh Appolonia
Ms. Appolonia is the daughter of Dann and Diane Appolonia of West Newton and a graduate of Yough Senior High School. She is a mathematics and computer science major.

Romano Sebastiani
Mr. Sebastiani is the son of JoAnn Sebastiani of Greensburg and a graduate of Greensburg Central Catholic. He is a biology major.

Dr. Lowell D. Shaffer Student Athlete Award
This award is presented to students involved in the college’s intercollegiate athletics program who demonstrate academic excellence.

Samantha Kluz
Ms. Kluz is the daughter of Joe and Donna Kluz of Roscoe and a graduate of California Area High School. She is a biology major.

Marisa Lizins
Ms. Lizins is the daughter of Andrejs and Astrida Lizins of Honey Brook and a graduate of Twin Valley High School. She is a mathematics and justice administration and criminology major.
