The University of Pittsburgh and its five regional campuses announced Friday, February 22, 2019, the launch of the Pitt Success Pell Match Program.
Through this program, the University will begin matching federal Pell Grants dollar for dollar (not to exceed the cost of attendance). In addition, the University will move to expand aid for families with unmet need as part of a concerted effort to remove financial barriers for students pursuing the world-class Pitt education.
“I truly believe that higher education is the single most important investment that individuals (and their families) can make in their future,” said Pitt Chancellor Patrick Gallagher. “A college degree brings opportunity, connections and — the data is compelling — economic strength and success.”
The action is the most significant restructuring of financial aid in the University of Pittsburgh’s history. The Federal Pell Grant Program provides need-based grants to low-income undergraduate and certain postbaccalaureate students to promote access to postsecondary education.
The Pitt Success Pell Match Program will kick off in fall 2019. Approximately 5,000 undergraduate students across all five campuses will benefit. The University will notify students with a federal Pell Grant of their eligibility for the Pitt Success Pell Match Program and confirm the award amount.
“This is a great step toward making college affordable for families in our region,” said Pitt-Johnstown President Dr. Jem Spectar. “Now more students can achieve their dream of attending Pitt-Johnstown, part of the world class University of Pittsburgh.
"Pitt-Johnstown applauds Chancellor Gallagher and Dr. (Provost and Senior Vice Chancellor Ann E.) Cudd for their leadership to improve college access and affordability.”
