JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – The Black Action Society (BAS) hosted a memorable Soul Food Dinner on Saturday, February 7, featuring live entertainment from the local musical group, Smooth Sound Band, in Heritage Hall.
Students filled Heritage Hall for the event, which successfully combined cultural celebration, community building, and live entertainment. The Soul Food Dinner provided an opportunity for the campus community to come together, enjoy authentic cuisine, and experience the vibrant musical stylings of the Smooth Sound Band.
The band performed from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, energizing students with an evening of music and celebration. A special highlight of the night came when BAS President Kristen Butler joined the band on stage to perform "Killing Me Softly" (the Fugees version), drawing enthusiastic applause from attendees.
The evening's menu featured traditional soul food choices prepared collaboratively by Chartwell's and BAS members. The dinner showcased beloved recipes and favorites, including potato salad, cabbage, collard greens, sweet potatoes, macaroni and cheese, fried fish, BBQ wings, and cornbread.
BAS advisor, and UPJ Director of Community Engagement, Sherri Rae, had this to say: “The students did a great job of planning and running this event and they, along with the Smooth Sound Band, made the night into a real celebration.”
The event exemplified BAS's commitment to celebrating Black culture and creating meaningful experiences that bring the Pitt-Johnstown community together.
