Residence halls close for the semester at 9 p.m., Friday, May 1. Students are required to move out of their rooms within 12 hours of their last final exam or by residence hall closing (whichever is earlier). Information on the residence hall closing process is available on the checklist below and in the Residential Handbook. Information will also be affixed to residents’ doors during the last week of the term.
The only residents who will be approved to stay past the closing time are graduating seniors who are processing at Commencement, students required to be here for official University business (i.e., student-athletes and RAs), or students who have a Friday exam AND are either traveling by train/airplane or driving more than 200 miles to get home. The following reasons do NOT qualify for a late-stay:
- being scheduled to work at an off-campus job,
- failing to make travel arrangements in advance, or
- wanting to attend graduation or events in the area.
Students who wish to receive permission to stay the residence hall past closing time should submit a Late Stay Request: SPRING, which is available now in the Housing Forms & Task section of the Housing Portal. The deadline to request a late stay is 4 p.m., Wednesday, April 22. Students who have a legitimate reason to stay late but who fail to submit a request by the deadline will be fined $100. Students are NOT approved to stay late unless they receive an email message from the Housing Office confirming that permission has been granted.
The following applies to all APPROVED late-staying students EXCEPT graduating seniors, student-athletes, and RAs:
- Students must depart campus by 10 a.m., Saturday, May 2.
- Students are subject to a $75 overnight charge.
- Students must check out with an RA in their area (staff will be available until 10 a.m.)
- Students who do not leave by 10 a.m. will be subject to a $100 fine for an unauthorized stay.
Check-Out Checklist
- Plan NOW for your departure.
- Students must move out within 12 hours after their last final exam, or by 9 p.m. on May 1, whichever is earlier. Students who do not have a final exam on Friday will not be approved for a late stay.
- Graduating seniors should leave by 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 2.
- All others, excluding student-athletes and RAs, who have received permission to stay past Friday, 9 p.m. must vacate by 10 a.m. on Saturday, May 2.
- Remove all items from your room. Any items left behind after you have checked out will be considered abandoned and either be donated to charity or discarded. Students who leave items behind will be subject to a $100 removal fee.
- Clean your room. Your room must be in the same condition as when you moved in. Students whose rooms are left unclean will be subject to a cleaning fee, the amount of which depends on where you reside and ranges from $100 to $400. You should complete the following tasks:
- Wipe off desks, dressers, tables, countertops and vanities.
- Empty and wipe out all drawers, and remove debris from the floor.

- DO NOT repair any damages to University property. Repairs and other maintenance items must be completed by Facilities Management staff.
- Resolve any damage issues with your roommates. Unless an individual accepts responsibility in writing or is found responsible via a judicial hearing, all persons in the living environment will share responsibility. Damages assessed to students who do not complete a room walk-through with an RA are not appealable.
- Turn in your room key(s). Keys can only be returned in one of two ways: 1) giving them to an RA in your area when you check out, or 2) placing them in the blue Key Return box (using an Express Checkout envelope) outside of the Housing Office, 130 Student Union. Express Checkout envelopes are available from your RA and outside the Housing Office.
- Turn in your mailbox key. Mailbox keys should be returned to the Mail Room in the Student Union. The Housing Office is not able to accept mailbox keys.
- Sign out. Be sure to sign the bottom affixed to your door.
Have a GREAT summer!
