Spring Term Housing & Dining Services FAQ

  • When will spring term move-in begin for residential students?
Pitt-Johnstown residence halls will reopen on Sunday, January 31 for all returning residential students.  Students who are moving onto campus for the first time (including those who deferred their housing for the fall) and students who received permission in the fall semester to change rooms will be able to return on Saturday, January 30.  Students arriving on January 31 can begin moving onto campus at 10 a.m.  Students arriving on January 30 will be permitted to arrive between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m.

  • Do I need to be tested for COVID-19 prior to moving onto campus?
Although a negative test result is not required, all residential students are STRONGLY ENCOURAGED to be tested for COVID-19 utilizing the free at-home Quest test.  Information on how to obtain this test is available here.

  • Will I need to shelter in place for seven days when I move in for the spring term?
Yes.  All students must begin their at-home shelter in place on January 23 in preparation to travel to campus.  Students will then shelter in place on campus until at least February 10.

  • What can I do while sheltering in place on campus?
    • Only have close contact with your pod or roommates
    • Only leave your room or apartment for picking up food, outdoor safe exercise, Wellness Center exercise, attending class in person, working when necessary, and essential shopping and medical needs.
    • Group work and student activities should be held virtually.

  • Will I receive a refund for my spring housing and dining?
Housing and meal plan fee proration will be offered based on the move-in date outlined above.   Meal plans will be prorated for meal swipes. Dining Dollars will not be adjusted, and the full amount will remain on your account. Prorations for housing and dining costs will be calculated based on the date housing was originally scheduled to open (January 10) to the newly announced date (January 31).  Adjustments will be posted to PittPAY after February 5, 2021.

If the adjustment creates a credit balance on your student account, it will be sent to the PittPAY eRefund bank account you have designated on the student (not authorized user) side of PittPAY.  If you are not enrolled in eRefunds, log into PittPAY now to designate where your student account refund should be deposited.

If you do not return to campus for the spring term, you will receive a refund for the term. You must complete the housing cancellation process (submit the online cancellation, retrieve belongings, and return room key) by January 23, 2021 to receive a full refund (this date has been extended for this year).

  • If I am not returning to campus for the spring term, how can I cancel my housing and dining?
You can cancel your housing online at my.pitt.edu (the cancellation form is in the Johnstown Campus Housing & Dining Services task center).  The deadline to complete the cancellation process (submit the online cancellation, retrieve belongings, and return room key) has been extended to January 23, 2021. Once you submit your online cancellation, you will receive additional instructions from Housing & Dining Services.

  • What guidelines will need to be followed in the residence halls?
The same guidelines that were in place for the fall will continue for the spring term.

  • What dining options will be available and when?
PJ’s Dining Hall will open for the evening meal on January 31 (dining options will be available for students arriving on January 30.)

  • What do I do if I decide to return home after I have moved onto campus?
If you decide to leave campus housing at any time during the spring semester, you must officially cancel your housing and meal plan.  Prorated refunds will be available to students who complete the cancellation process (submit the online cancellation, remove belongings, and return the room key) before we enter the last third of the semester (that date has not yet been determined).  Students who leave campus and do not complete the cancellation process will not be eligible for a refund.
