Your Mountain Cat Card, also known as your student ID, is the tool that every student, faculty, and staff member needs on their first day to access essential campus services. The magnetic strip on your Mountain Cat Card is programmed to give you access to your residence hall, meal plan, and other campus facilities.
Students, faculty, and staff are required to pre-submit a photo for their Mountain Cat Card. Student cards will be mailed to students’ home addresses. Faculty and staff will be given instructions on how to retrieve their card. Please follow the instructions detailed below to submit your photo.

Photo submissions are made to the Oakland campus' Panther Central.
Photo Requirements
- Current color photo (headshot) taken within the past six months
- You must be the only person in the photo
- If you normally wear glasses, wear them in the photo...but ensure your eyes are open and visible in the photo (no baseball caps or hats)
- Photo should be taken from the collarbone up where your face is centered and fully seen
- Ensure proper lighting without the use of a filter, against a neutral or smooth background
- JPG format with a maximum file size of 5 MB (5,120 KB) and minimum dimensions of 260 x 300 pixels.
Chosen Name
The University of Pittsburgh recognizes the need or preference for students to refer to themselves by a chosen name. Students can add a chosen name other than their legal given first and/or middle name for use on campus. Contact the Registrar if you have any question related to a chosen name.

- Login to the my.pitt.edu portal
- Search for “Manage My Account”
- Click “Contact Information”
- Click “Click here to set your Preferred Name”
- Click Yes when “Do you want to set your preferred name?” question displays (same as above)
- Add your preferred first and preferred middle (optional) names
Please remember that your ID will have your chosen name on the front and your legal name on the back. If asked to show your ID as a form of identification, both your chosen and legal name are shown.

There is no cost for your first chosen name student ID. All other Mountain Cat Card reprints due to additional preferred name updates, lost/stolen IDs, will result in a $20 fee.
Terms & Conditions
The Pitt-Johnstown ID Center reserves the right to deny photo requests that do not meet our photo criteria. Ensure that you have read the information regarding proper photo submission before submitting your photo.
All communication regarding the status, as well as retrieval instructions, of your Mountain Cat Card will be sent to your Pitt email account.
If it is discovered that the photo you submitted is not you, Campus Police will be contacted. Appropriate legal action will ensue.
